KLEPTOTRACE presented at ESC Annual Conference
KLEPTOTRACE at XXIII Eurocrim Annual Conference
On 7 September, the KLEPTOTRACE project was presented at the Eurocrim 2023 conference “The Renaissance Of European Criminology” in Florence, organised by the European Society of Criminology. The paper is entitled “Framing and detecting EU targeted sanctions. Evasion and circumvention techniques by Russian individuals and entities” (Authors: Giovanni Nicolazzo, Matteo Anastasio, Michele Riccardi, Carlotta Carbone, from Transcrime – Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore of Milan) and was presented during the panel “Conflict, crime and international involvement: understanding and documenting crimes in war-time Ukraine”.
We discussed the first results of a large-scale analysis of companies controlled by sanctioned Russian entities in European countries, focusing on where these companies operate, through which corporate ownership structures they are controlled, and whether their ownership and governance schemes may indicate money laundering, financial crime and sanctions evasion practices. This study aims to address the current limitations of authorities’ asset tracing activities.
